Understanding Kidney Disease – Population Overview

Chronic Kidney Disease

  • More than 10%, or 26 million, American adults have chronic kidney disease (CKD) and most don’t know it
  • Kidney disease is the ninth leading cause of death in America
  • High blood pressure and diabetes are the two leading causes of kidney disease
  • Medicare spends approximately $68 billion annually on CKD (not including medications)

Transition to Dialysis

  • 52% of renal patients “crash” into dialysis or start dialysis in an inpatient setting[i]
  • 24% of patients “crash” without ever being diagnosed with CKD[ii]
  • Crashes increase per patient costs by ~$53k during the first year on dialysis[iii]
  • 74% of patients start dialysis without the preferred vascular access in place[iv]
  • 25% of new end stage renal disease (ESRD) patients have not seen a nephrologist[v]

 End Stage Renal Disease

  • ESRD patients represent only 1% of the Medicare population but 6% of costs[vi]
  • Medicare spends $31 billion annually to treat ESRD patients
  • More than 661,000 Americans have kidney failure
    • 468,000 individuals are on dialysis
    • 93,000 live with a functioning kidney transplant
    • 94% of ESRD patients have four or more comorbidities[vii]
    • ESRD patients, on average, take 19 or more pills each day
    • ESRD patients are hospitalized approximately two times per year, spend approximately 11 days per year in the hospital and have a 35% readmission rate[viii]
